HOW TO USE THE BIOMAP SEARCH FUNCTION:

This site is designed to help you search for organizations in the BIOMAP.

The navigation bar – located across the top of the site – allows you to view the Glossary (definitions of the various resources within the Life Science Community), view Links, provide Feedback, or Contact Us. You can click on Home to visit the BioBusiness Alliance of Minnesota Home page.

How do I search for the information I want?

You can search the site a variety of ways.

1. You can click on a Button to the right of the Google map (e.g. Medical Devices).

2. You can select Search Type and Value from the drop-down lists (e.g. Organization City – Minneapolis).

3. You can refine your search by using both the button and the drop-down lists (e.g. Medical Devices companies in Minneapolis).

A) Button search:
The buttons are those that appear in the five horizontal rows to the right of the Google map. Each button represents a category as defined in the Minnesota Life Science Community. If you have questions regarding the definitions of these categories, please go to “Glossary” for a description.

How the button search works:

  1. Select one button. For example, clicking on the “Medical Devices” button under Minnesota Industries will retrieve all organizations that produce Medical Device products.

  2. Clicking more than one button in the same row (e.g. Minnesota Industries) will retrieve organizations that meet either criteria (therefore adding to the list). For example, clicking on “Medical Devices” and “Pharma/Biologics” under Minnesota Industries will result in a list of all the organizations that produce Medical Device products and all the organizations that produce Pharma/Biologics products.

  3. Selecting buttons in different rows (e.g., Minnesota Industries and Enabling Knowledge Clusters) will narrow the search results. For example, selecting “Medical Devices” under Minnesota Industries and selecting “Bioengineering and Clinical Capabilities” under Enabling Knowledge Clusters will result in a list of organizations that meet both criteria, i.e. Medical Device companies that also conduct research and development in bioengineering and clinical capabilities.

  4. Selecting additional buttons from other categories will further refine your search.

B) Drop-Down list search:

  1. Organization Name

    • Example: To select a particular organization, such as Abbott Laboratories, Medtronic, or Tactile Systems Technology - select the name of the organization you want to show on the map from the drop-down list and then click the “Search” button.

  2. Organization City

    • Example: To select all the organizations in a specific city such as Andover, Minneapolis, Rochester or Zumbrota - select the city from the drop-down list. Click “Search.”

  3. Organization County

    • Example: Selecting County is the same as the City search. Select the county whose data points you would like to see displayed. Click “Search.”

  4. Legislative District

    • Example: Minnesota Legislative Districts are searchable by District Code (e.g. 02A, 24B, 66A). Click on the District you want to see populated. Click “Search.” If you do not know the Code of the District you want to see populated (i.e. you know the district by the elected official representing it, you can search for the correlating code by city or address at: http://geo.commissions.leg.state.mn.us/districts/start.html).

  5. Selecting Multiple Values

  • Example: If you are searching by Organization City and wish to select both Minneapolis and Saint Paul, hold down the “Control Key” (Ctrl) while you select Minneapolis and then hold down the “Contorl Key (Ctrl) again when selecting Saint Paul. Click “Search.”

Where are the results?

  1. Search results appear in the form of a descriptive list of all organizations that meet the selected criteria at the bottom of the page. Each organization also appears as a bubble on the Google map. If you do not automatically see the list, scroll down the page.

  2. The list of organizations includes the name, address, website (if applicable), and short description of each organization.

On the bottom right of the webpage is the list of organizations that meet the selected criteria. For example:

Results 1 - 13 of 13

1. Abbott Laboratories Diagnostic Division
10400 Viking Dr.
Eden Prairie, MN 55344
http://www.abbottdiagnostics.com/
Abbott Diagnostics is a global lead

If there are more than 20 organizations that result from your search, you have to click through multiple pages:

How do I know what I searched?

On the left hand side is a description of your current search criteria. For example:

Current Search Criteria:
Minnesota Industries - Medical Devices

Enabling Knowledge Clusters - Bioengineering and Clinical Capabilities

Can I print the list of organizations?

Yes. After you have selected the criteria and retrieved a list of organizations, you can print the list using the File → Print in your browser navigation bar.

Do I have to start a new search each time I want to search new categories?

To conduct a new search, click “Start New Search.” This will clear all selected criteria.

If you clicked on a button, you may click on it a second time to turn off that button, or you can select “Start New Search.”
